Schoolies Timor-Leste Project
An Alternative to Schoolies Week
Background
With the growing disillusionment with the personal, health and financial costs associated with Schoolies Week, the Rotary Club of Kerang issued a challenge to Year 12 students at their local high school to participate in a transforming event of a lifetime - to become a member of 'Team Cambodia'. This meant stepping out of their comfort zone, and spending 10 days helping in a variety of community building tasks in Cambodia. It turned out to be a peak life experience for all involved.
The Kalamunda Proposal
Based on the success of the Kerang project, Youth Action Kalamunda and the Rotary Club of Kalamunda has created Schoolies Timor-Leste Project. This initiative offers Year 12 students at local Kalamunda schools the opportunity to join a team that will engage in a variety of community building activities in the small East Timorese village of Triloka.
2010 marks the third year the project has been operating thanks to many dedicated volunteers and sponsors.
East Timor is a country with strong historic links with Australia. It also has the lowest GDP per capita income in Asia, and 80% unemployment.
The overall goal of this initiative is to create a unique opportunity for both East Timorese and Kalamunda young people to
- think and act like global citizens,
- develop mutual cross cultural awareness
- achieve personal challenges
- learn new life skills
- positive make a difference
Your Chamber is fully supportive of this initiative, and will be raising funds at various events through the year.
